Description

The Ekaya store in Ahmedabad, Gujarat has been conceptualized as a ‘A Walk in the Weave’. The first concept store in Ekaya’s portfolio, it is designed to speak as much about the brand and its legacy, as the product; the space exemplifies the brand’s vision of promoting luxury handloom textiles to a new generation of buyers.

I: Garment display and visual merchandising have been designed in congruence to provide an organised, chic aesthetic to the store. Lighting is designed to bring focus on the garment. The reflected light that bounces off the metallic elements illuminates the overall space, providing soft ambient light.

The weaving loom with its linear ‘tana-bana’ (warp and weft), was taken as the fundamental motif, deconstructed and, juxtaposed with the space to form all design elements. It is unique in the way that the space-making, the display and the lighting elements, are all integrated and derived from it. The installation lends the space a labyrinth-like quality that invites the customer to disengage from the outside and immerse fully into Ekaya’s world of exquisite craftsmanship.

II: Intimate pockets for bridal wear provide a highly personalised experience for bridal parties, featuring traditional takkhat-style seating where sarees can be opened out for viewing, as is traditionally done.

III: The display screens glow in daylight and double up as a beautiful backdrop for spontaneous product shoots.

The interwoven rods of brushed brass create an ever-changing tapestry that lends the space a visual dynamism, visual dynamism, with layered experience zones that stage a subtle reveal of the overall space. The rods are an ode to the delicate ‘zari’, or the use of metallic gold and silver threads popularized by Benarasi weavers. The interior shell—reminiscent of the dimly lit ‘karkhanas’ or weaving workshops where these luminescent textiles are born—has been kept minimal and dark, to accentuate the colourful product. The leather-finished inky black granite floor serves as a tactile invitation for the visitor to walk barefoot and become one with the space. Additionally, the concept lends itself well to the challenge presented by the existing physical space of 5 distinct, staggered bays with a staggered column grid—the installation unifying them in a way as to create a seamless user journey.

IV: Slit windows in the assissted browsing pockets provide slivers of natural daylight, lending a soft beauty to the silken weaves, while also serving as a backdrop for visual merchandising. The pocket entry is flanked by mirrors for instant fit checks.

The design for Ekaya engages intimately with the notion of weaving—be it through the 3D brass installation or through the subtle nuances of its layout—immersing shoppers into the craft, and allowing them to incidentally discover new collections and products. The intervention deftly bridges the traditional and the modern, reflecting the evolving palettes of a new India, authentic to its roots, but distinctly contemporary.
