Description

A happy workspace is a healthy workspace. We strive to create spaces that enable employees to engage with each other. These pockets where moments of 'happenstance' take place are the soul of any office. Keeping this principle in mind, the extension of the existing Studio Lotus office in Lado Sarai was designed to house multiple functions like the café, seating space for the office principals, workspace and a material library to house all the samples and model making lab.

I: The window ledge is designed at a seating height so the employees can use it to sit on from the corridor. From the inside, the height is used to create a storage device in granite running along the length of the studio. Functional yet interactive, this gesture does a ‘little more’ to make the best use of the space

A pared down aesthetic was achieved through a minimal material palette of Acacia wood, OSB board and powder coated mild steel. The walls in the main workspace are utilized as multifunctional surfaces. The paneling is designed as a composition of lacquered glass and Matterwall, thus creating pockets of discussion near the workstations. The principals’ area with its large inside-outside connection welcomes users to work inside on the long community table, plug into phone booths for focused work, or sit/stand outside for a casual meeting or chat up.

II: The two-person cabins offer a flexible solution for focused tasks. Rather than being permanently assigned, they provide individuals with a private space to engage in deep work, take important calls, hold meetings, or join video conferences—all in an environment that ensures privacy and minimizes disruption to those in the shared workspace.

III: A thoughtfully designed multi-level lighting system enhances the workspace, allowing users to tailor the ambiance to their needs. This approach ensures optimal comfort, and creates an environment of productivity

Well-lit workspaces are known to boost productivity. A space where various levels of lighting are built-in to cater to a variety of needs that the user might have. The studio's lighting design comprises four levels of lighting - daylight, task light, ambient light, and accent lights. Each performs a separate function at different times of the day. Task lighting is calculated to offer optimum illumination of the work desks for both digital and analog work. Custom linear fixtures spanning 3 meters were installed to provide a clean look. The top half of the linear fixtures up-lights the ceiling, accentuating the texture of the OSB board while the bottom half illuminates the work desks.

IV: The principal’s area is divided into group work and individual workspace by the addition of a large multifunctional table in the common space, spacious ‘phone booths, and cabins, offering different scales of workspaces

The façade is designed largely in glass, overlooking a courtyard with age-old neem trees, furthering a sense of calm. The material library and model making area for the studio comprises of a large multi-storage unit with open shelving and drawers of different sizes to store various materials. Centrally placed tables enable discussions during the material selection process. The choice of hardy materials like granite and laminate makes for a robust system easy to maintain. The terrace comes alive with a grid of smaller samples collected from the studio, set in cement, merging cost-effectiveness with sustainability.
